Former Israel PM says 9/11 good for Israel

Thu Apr 17, 2008 at 03:00:33 PM PDT

The prominent Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a group of university students that the 9/11 attacks were good for Israel.  Netanyahu is the leader of the reactionary Likud Party and the poster boy of the neoconservative chickenhawks who planned and promoted the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

My question is how will this play out?  If Louis Farrakhan or Reverend Wright made similar remarks would we ever hear the end of it?  Will John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama condemn those comments as forcefully as they have Jimmy Carter's meeting with leaders of Hamas?  Or will Netanyahu's comments be confined to the nether regions of neo-nazi and ultra-libertarian bloggers?

My guess is the mainstream media will bury these comments.  However, it may be to Obama's advantage to bring up these remarks and condemn them forcefully, putting his opponents on the spot to do the same.  It might take some of the heat off his association with Reverend Wright, and turn the tables on the neocons who have been questioning his support for Israel.
